Community Work

Amit and Renu migrated to Australia in 1987 with a strong interest in building and sustaining a supportive community that celebrates Indian culture whilst ensuring integration in Australia. It has always been their aim to enhance Indian and Australian culture by bringing the two together, and they have sacrificed a great deal of time, effort and money to do so. They have a passion for India and its rich history and culture which drives them to spread it.
Through their efforts they have established a strong legacy of events which will have a lasting impact. The Holi Festival, language school and performances have been to ensure the next generation are not only aware of their heritage, but proud of it too.

Harjit Singh Saini

Convener - Community Radio 4EB 

Punjabi Group

Harjit started the famous Brisbane Punjabi Press Club, an umbrella for all Indian & Punjabi journalism in Australia, covering the topics of 1984 massacre to the passing away of Manmeet Alisher. Harjit's journalism has created a calm in the community amidst intense turbulence. He has many strides to serve the community- tirelessly and with the vibrancy of Indian Punjabi flavor in Australia, that is a core part of MDA and Queensland Government connecting multicultural ethnic community radio under one umbrella- Radio 4EB. 

Harjit started volunteering for Radio 4EB - Ethnic radio in Punjabi coloring the hearts of migrant Indian community from the farmers at Coffs Harbour to the popular Punjabi places. Today after 8 years of service, Harjit is Working as a convener of Punjabi Group at 4eb since 2018

Kulbir Singh Malhotra

Sikh Kirtan Prachar Mission of Australia Inc.

Since arriving in Australia in 1989, he has devoted his life to community and volunteer working, never saying “no” to anyone who approaches him for help, including new migrants, students, youth, disabled, or the elderly. Leveraging his position on various government-affiliated and independent boards and committees, he has actively and consistently contributed time, human capital and financial resources in activities that benefit the community. As a telecom scientist, he was Project managed Australia’s first NBN project in 2008. He was also responsible for the design and development of India’s first satellite telecommunications system
(TRACT) in 1978. Volunteering as J.P. in various libraries in NSW. He is also a regular Half Marathon & City2Surf Runner, leading a "Sydney Flying Sikh" group of 40 to 50 Sikh youths.

Dr Lata Satyen

Lecturer

Deakin University

Dr. Lata Satyen is and Senior Lecturer and Psychologist at Deakin University and is engaged in collaborative work with the Indian community in Australia and India at different levels. She assists Indian families experiencing family violence in her role as a pro bono psychologist. She assists victims, primarily women and their children in critical and non-critical situations. In this role, Lata works with the entire gamut of agencies involved in victim and child protection including the family and magistrates’ courts, the medical system, immigration review systems, country consulates, legal professionals, health service providers and local Councils.

Neena works as outlet Manager at Nova Employment Blacktown. NOVA is a Disability Employment Service supported by the Australian Government. Neena support people with disability to find and maintain award wage employment within the general community. She is passionate and take pride in helping people with disability to get the career they want. Neena works hard and thrives on providing personalized support to job seekers. She focus on client’s ability instead of disability. She passionately contact Employers for successful placement on jobs. Over 5 years with Nova, Neena has assisted number of Australian Indians in rewarding jobs. In the end, changing the lives of Australian Indians with intellectual disability and low self-esteem is the most satisfying moments of Neena’s life.

Manjula Rao

Founder & Director

Laxmi Guru Kripa & Child Empowerment

Manjula is the founder and director of 5 years audited NGO 'Laxmi Guru Kripa'. Their most recent 'ChildrenEmpower' Project in Bhama Village, Madhya Pradesh, involves teaching the art of Taekwondo to several girls and boys, living under the poverty line. This is a self-defence form, originating in Korea. Manjula is doing ground-breaking work, as she is creating an awareness among the children on how to protect and stand up for themselves, instilling immense confidence in their sense of self. She is addressing the underlying issues of fear, lack of education and stigma, which give rise to unforgivable crimes, such as rape.

Paviter Kumar Noori

Ecutas Productions

In Pavitra's various roles, he has created a digital integration of Indian Diaspora in Queensland. As an immigrant himself, with children now learning about the culture of his roots, he decided to keep the cultural rhythm alive not only for him & his family, but all the families wanting to learn - what India is all about. Pavitra ended up creating inclusive events and attended by not only the Indian/Asian communities and the wider communities alike. Paviter has helped creating some very meaningful collaborations with all the stakeholders, forming relationships and collaborations, to create a meaningful platform for Indian community which now produces the largest Brisbane Holi – Festival of Colours which is supported by the Brisbane City Council, Queensland Government, Incredible India (Indian Govt.’s official Campaign) and many local businesses.

 The Gandhi Experiment 

In 2014, Margaret Hepworth founded The Gandhi Experiment, an education initiative bringing Gandhi’s principles of Ahimsa, teaching non-violence as a conscious choice, Satyagraha, taking committed, positive action, into schools and organisations across Australia and India. Since its inception, The Gandhi Experiment’s workshops in Global Citizenship, Leadership Within, Conflict Resolution, Forgiveness, and ‘Almost Impossible have reached over 5,000 students and teachers. She was also invited by Rupa Publications, India, to showcase her work, Margaret authored the book, 'The Gandhi Experiment – Teaching our teenagers how to become global citizens with the deliberate intent that this work in teaching non-violence can be accessed globally.

Suresh Khatav is founder of "Spirit of India (NSW) Inc A not for profit organization established in 12th May 2004 in view of starting Yoga education program for Australian community. His contribution to community in India and solving many of health issues through yogic practice. has controlled and cured people through the non conventional medical system. Apart from above yoga centre, he also used to take yoga class for inmates at Dilwannia Prison centre from 2005 - 2006 and at , Parramatta transitional centre for six months, all of this was at no cost..
